Laser hemorrhoid treatment in Jordan — planning a medical trip from the US

Thinking about traveling to Jordan for treatment? Every year, patients from the US, many from Arabic-speaking communities in New York, Chicago and beyond, fly to Amman for laser proctology care they’ve waited months to access at home. This guide walks through the practical side of that trip: the visa, the flight, the cost, where to stay, and exactly what happens from the day you land to the day you fly home.

I’m Dr. Aref Hammam. I treat international patients every week, and I know the logistics can feel like the hardest part before you even think about the procedure itself. This page is meant to answer the questions patients ask me most, so you can plan with confidence.

The short answers

Do US citizens need a visa for Jordan?
Yes, but it’s issued on arrival at the airport for most US travelers. No advance embassy visit needed. Details
How long do I need to stay?

Why Patients Travel to Jordan for Treatment

Jordan, and Amman in particular, has built a reputation as one of the Middle East’s leading medical tourism destinations, drawing patients from across the Gulf, Africa and increasingly North America and Europe for procedures ranging from cosmetic surgery to cardiology and, in our case, laser proctology.

No long wait
Many US patients tell me they were quoted 4 to 6 months for a specialist appointment at home. We typically confirm a treatment date within days of your online consultation.

A specialist who speaks your language
Consultations and follow-up happen in Arabic or English, so nothing gets lost explaining a condition that’s already hard to talk about.

Same-day, minimally invasive treatment
Laser hemorrhoidoplasty means no incisions and same-day discharge, so your trip is built around a short procedure, not a hospital stay.

A lower total costEven after flights and hotels, most patients pay less than the out-of-pocket cost of equivalent surgery in the US. See the full cost comparison.

None of this replaces your own judgment. Medical travel is a real decision with real logistics, and this guide is meant to help you make it with your eyes open, not to oversell the idea.

Before You Book: How the Process Starts

Don’t book flights before your case has been reviewed. Confirm eligibility first, then plan travel around a confirmed date.

1

Send your case.
Share your symptoms, and any reports or photos you’re comfortable sending, through our online consultation. This is free and carries no obligation.

2

Get a response within 24 hours.
I personally review every submission, in Arabic or English, and let you know whether laser treatment looks like a fit or whether you need a different plan.

3

Agree on a treatment date.
Once we’ve confirmed your suitability, we’ll suggest available dates so you can book flights and a hotel around a real appointment, not a guess.

4

Plan your travel.
Use the visa, flight and hotel sections below once your date is set.

If you’re not sure whether what you’re dealing with is even piles, start with our guide on what piles are and how to confirm them before you reach out.

Visa & Entry for US Citizens

Most US citizens do not need to arrange a visa before flying. A visa is issued on arrival at Jordanian airports and land border crossings for citizens of many countries, the US included, and this also applies to medical visits, not only tourism.

This is general guidance, not immigration advice. Visa rules can change. Always check the current requirements on Jordan’s official e-visa website or with a Jordanian embassy or consulate before you travel, and if your case is unusual (a non-US passport, a criminal record, prior travel to certain countries), confirm with the embassy directly.

Getting There: Flights, Airport, and Currency

Flights from the US

Several airlines connect the US to Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport (airport code AMM). Royal Jordanian operates direct flights from New York-JFK, and Delta and United also serve the JFK-Amman route. A nonstop flight from New York takes roughly 11 hours. From Chicago and most other US cities, expect one connection, often through New York, Europe or the Gulf.

Book your flight only after your treatment date is confirmed (see the step above). If you’d like, we’re happy to suggest realistic arrival and departure windows around your procedure date.

Arriving in Amman

Queen Alia International Airport is about 30 to 45 minutes from central Amman by car, depending on traffic. Licensed taxis and hotel transfers are available at the airport; agree on a fare or confirm a metered ride before you get in.

Currency and money

Jordan’s currency is the Jordanian dinar (JOD), which has been pegged to the US dollar since 1995 at a fixed rate of roughly 1 JOD to $1.41 (or $1 to about 0.71 JOD). This means the exchange rate is stable and predictable; it won’t swing while you’re planning your trip. US dollars are widely accepted in hotels and by taxis in Amman, but it’s worth carrying some dinars in cash for smaller purchases. ATMs are widely available, and major credit cards are accepted at hotels, larger pharmacies and restaurants.

Where to Stay in Amman

Amman has a wide range of hotels, from international chains to smaller boutique properties, many within a short drive of the clinic and Al-Istiqlal Hospital. What to look for:

If you’d like a specific recommendation based on your budget and treatment date, ask us when we confirm your appointment, we’re glad to point you toward hotels other patients have used.

Your Trip, Day by Day

Every patient’s exact schedule depends on their procedure and recovery, but this is the typical shape of a treatment trip:

1

Day 1

Arrival

Land at Queen Alia International Airport, get to your hotel, and rest. We recommend arriving at least a day before your appointment so you’re not exhausted from the flight during your exam.

2

Day 2

Exam and treatment

You’ll have an in-person examination to confirm the treatment plan, followed by the procedure itself the same day where suitable. Laser hemorrhoidoplasty typically means same-day discharge, so you’ll return to your hotel to rest.

3

Day 3

Recovery and check-in

A quiet day. We’ll check on you and make sure recovery is on track before clearing you to travel.

4

Day 4

Departure

Once cleared, you’re free to fly home. See our recovery guide for tips on managing the flight itself.

After you’re home, we stay in touch for remote follow-up.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Piles

Do I need to speak Arabic to be treated in Jordan?

No. Consultations, treatment and follow-up are all available in English as well as Arabic.

Some patients extend their stay to see Petra, the Dead Sea or Amman itself, but we recommend doing that only after your surgeon confirms you’re cleared for more activity. Rest comes first in the days right after treatment.

Recovery varies by person and procedure. We’ll be honest with you if more time is needed before you fly, and can help you think through extending your hotel stay if it comes to that.

Most patients are cleared to fly within a few days, once the surgeon confirms recovery is on track. On the flight, walk regularly, drink water, eat fiber, and avoid long stretches of sitting. See our recovery guide for more detail.

Yes, many patients bring a companion, and we’d encourage it if you can. The visa on arrival process applies the same way to accompanying travelers. The procedure is done under anesthesia chosen by the surgeon, so you should feel no pain during it. Afterward most patients describe mild discomfort that is generally less than after open surgery, though everyone is different.

We stay reachable on WhatsApp throughout your trip, from before you fly until you’re safely home.
