Understanding your condition
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It typically develops after an anal abscess that has not healed properly — leaving a tract that can cause persistent discharge, pain, and recurrent infection.
Unlike many anorectal conditions, anal fistulas almost never resolve without treatment. Without intervention the tract remains open, prone to recurrent infections, and can worsen or branch into a more complex fistula over time.
In the U.S., patients in New York and Chicago face months-long waits just for a specialist consultation. Laser anal fistula treatment in Jordan offers a faster, less invasive path to lasting relief.
Why patients from NYC & Chicago choose Jordan

Why Laser
Traditional fistulotomy cuts open the fistula tract, leaving a large wound that takes weeks to heal. Laser treatment (FiLaC) closes the tract from within — no open wound, no wound packing, no stitches.
Protecting the sphincter is the primary challenge in fistula surgery. Laser treatment is sphincter-preserving — significantly reducing the incontinence risk that comes with traditional cutting techniques.
Most patients are discharged the same day and fly home within 3 days. Compared to 2–4 weeks of recovery with traditional surgery, laser means far less disruption to work and daily life.
Types treated
Anal fistulas are classified by their relationship to the sphincter muscles. Dr. Aref assesses each case individually to determine the most appropriate laser approach.
Passes through the internal sphincter only, tracking between the sphincters to the skin. The most common type and well-suited to laser treatment with excellent outcomes.
Passes through both internal and external sphincter muscles. Laser treatment is a preferred sphincter-preserving approach, avoiding the incontinence risk of cutting techniques.
Loops above the sphincter complex. Less common and requires careful individual assessment. A combined or staged laser approach may be recommended.
A fistula that has returned after previous treatment. Laser offers a minimally invasive second option for patients whose first surgery did not achieve a lasting result.

How it works
The FiLaC (Fistula-tract Laser Closure) technique uses a radial-emitting laser probe inserted into the fistula tract. The laser energy destroys the epithelium lining the tract and obliterates it from within — sealing it without any external cutting.
The procedure is performed under anesthesia. The tract is gently probed, cleaned, and then the laser is passed through in a controlled withdrawal movement. Patients are discharged the same day and most fly home within 3 days.
Causes
Most anal fistulas develop as a complication of an anal abscess. When an abscess does not fully drain or heal, the infection creates a persistent tunnel between the anal glands and the skin. Other contributing factors include:
Important
Unlike some anorectal conditions that may respond to conservative management, anal fistulas almost always require intervention. Left untreated, a fistula will continue to discharge, become repeatedly infected, and the tract can branch into a more complex structure — making future treatment more challenging. Early laser treatment offers the best outcomes with the lowest recurrence risk.
Persistent discharge, recurrent abscess, risk of tract branching and complex secondary fistulas
Tract closed at its simplest stage — highest success rate, fastest recovery, lowest recurrence risk
Still treatable with laser, but may require a staged approach and more careful pre-procedure planning
